Meerkats at Kishinev Zoo

So a few days we went to Kishinev for a day.  The drive from Tiraspol was OK.  But it's kind of amusing that Moldovans don't have a border on the PMR side.  So anyone can get into the country without showing any documents (which is what we did).  Kishinev itself is pretty rundown and dirty. Your can tell that for the last 25 years since the end of Soviet, the country has been going downhill.  Lots of gypsies too))

Anyway, we ended up going to Kishinev Zoo, which was also pretty boring.  But we got to see this neat meerkats or suricates (Suricata suricatta).  There was a whole family of them.

This one is sitting in his little house))

Meerkat food: looks like lots of veggies

New Aquarium Project

Well, I could not live without an aquarium for long.  So here it is.  It's been 5 months since I got rid of my 75 gallon fish tank when I've moved out of Hollywood, Florida.  Now, here in Tiraspol, Transnistria, I got a brand new tank.  Well, it's not really new.  But it is a good deal.  I got this 380 liter tank, the stand, and lights for only 220 dollars.  Not bad.  I am going to through lights.  They are in a pretty bad shape.

Both, the lights and the tank are DIY.  Yes, someone actually glued this glass tank together and made the lights and the hood.  The hood and the lights are pretty shitty)))).  So, I am tossing them)))

Now I just need to buy a filter and some sand.  Buying filter actually turned out more difficult than I thought.  They don't sell canister filters or sumps here in Transnistria.  That's right, they don't.  Seems weird, but it's a tiny country.  So I am ordering a JBL CristalProfi GreenLine e1501 from Ukraine.  Oh, and I am making this tank into a Dniester biotope with different freshwater gobies and dojo/weather loaches

More Supermarket Fish: Asian Bighead Carp)))

I took some more photos of Asian Bighead Carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) at the local supermarket here in Tiraspol.  They had a tank full of them for sale.  Asian Carp are very popular here. I am kind surprised that American don't eat them.  From what I've seen on TV, Michigan rivers are full of these invasive fish.  Send them here))))

These guys are really fat.  I wonder if they are farmed somewhere close by

I've always wondered why Asian Carp have these low set eyes. It kind of makes them look like they have Down Syndrome

Lots of fat here)))

Another tank, this one is full of farmed carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Some Cool Snails From Dniester River

Some cool snails I caught in Dniester River (Tiraspol, PMR).  The long black ones are Melanopsis praerosa and the tiny ones are Theodoxus fluviatilis, which are actually fully freshwater nerites.  The small dots you seen on Theodoxus fluvatilis are actually their eggs.  Yes, they like to lay their eggs on top of each other for some reason.  Not sure why.

Here are some of the larger snails.  Honestly, I am not sure what they are.  Some sort of trap door snails.  Probably related to apple snails.  There were a ton of them all over Dniester

Another look at the trap door snails.  If anyone know what they are, please let me.

Our Fishing Attempt and a Grass Snake

So we went out fishing Saturday.  It was kind of chilly for August, but I liked it.  It's a nice change from that horrible heat.  We did not really go that far out of Tiraspol.  Likely Dniester is always close by))))

Typical Rural Area here in Transnistria

Finally, The Great Dniester River.  Ok, it's not really that great.  It's actually kind shallow)))

Strange Freshwater Crab

I saw this interesting freshwater crabs for sale in Kiev Pet Market.  There was this really old guy selling them. He claims that they are fully aquatic and fully freshwater.  He also claimed they he breeds them.  But I am not sure if I could really trust him 100%.  He could not really tell me much about the actual crabs and did not not the scientific name for them.  He simply called them Holland Crabs)))

I looked around online and I think that these are Potamon potamonis olivi.  It seems that they are most likely brackish.  Not sure if they can live in freshwater all the time.  But this guys claimed that they can. So who knows.

So if anyone knows anything about these freshwater crabs, please let me know. I am kind of curious myself.

Sturgeon at the Local Supermarket))

Lots of people say that it's difficult to keep sturgeon.  Well, here are few sturgeon at the local supermarket))) They are obviously mean for food, but they look super health.  They are difficult to photograph because they are constantly moving.

Here is the shot of their tanks

A little blurry due to constant movement

These guys are nice and fat.  It's kind of a shame that they will get eaten)))

Tiny Hedgehog Near My House

Just saw this little guy near my house. He was crossing the street at night. It's a European hedgehog or (Erinaceus europaeus). They have a lot of them here in Tiraspol. They are very cute. Lots of people leave food or milk for them.

European hedgehogs can get up to 30 cm in length.  These are not the wimpy African hedgehogs you see in pet stores.  These are real manly hedgehogs))).  But this little guy is just baby.  I wonder where his mom was. He was completely by himself.

Cool Nutria at Kiev Pet Market

Forgot to include these nutria Myocastor coypus in my last blog post. I kind of thought that these were small beavers))). But they are nutrias!!!!. And they look pretty fluffy. I really wanted to buy one. Especially the blond one

They seem pretty peaceful, but the who was selling this nutria told me that they bite

I hope people who buy them treat them as pets, and not make hats or coats out of them)))
